Pa. advocates say tapping state Medicaid for housing may help lower healthcare costs

Pa. health advocates are looking into using Medicaid money for housing in an effort to lower healthcare costs. One advocate says those with serious mental health conditions can face discrimination when they try to rent an apartment, adding that supportive housing assistance by having outreach counselors reassure landlords that prospective tenants have the outside support to be secure tenants. He adds that supportive housing enables those with serious mental health problems and or longstanding substance abuse problems be able to recover instead of moving them between jail, hospitals and homelessness.
