CMS offers glimpse of population health horizon

January 12, 2015

CMS is moving beyond its traditional beneficiaries to target a broader population by supporting programs that focus on behavioral, social and environmental factors that determine public health. The initiative, called its Quality Strategy, was set forth in an article in The New England Journal of Medicine, titled Beyond a Traditional Payer - CMS's Role in Improving Population Health. The strategy aims to reconcile clinical and community views of "population health" or the groups beyond those enrolled in a health system. As part of its untraditional outreach, CMS is continuing to develop its Innovation Center, through which it is testing new approaches, including methods for linking practices and patients to social services and care management payments for "non-face-to-face" services to support outreach and coordination.
